Cardenas and Vandenberg Earn SUNYAC Men's Wrestling Weekly Honors

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The SUNYAC names Cortland's J. C. Cardenas the Men's Wrestler of the Week and St. John Fisher University's Braydon Vandenberg repeats as the Rookie of the Week.

Cardenas was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the SUNYAC Championships after posting a 4-0 record in winning the 133-pound title. Cardenas opened with a 19-4 technical fall versus Lucas Dionne of Ithaca. He followed with a 17-0 technical fall against Derek Bernardino of St. John Fisher in the quarterfinals. Cardenas then earned a 7-2 decision over Osweo's Michael Santore in the semifinals and claimed the title with a 13-8 decision versus Isaias Torres of Ithaca in the finals. Cardenas improved to 10-0 on the season with five technical falls and one major.

The Cardinals competed in the SUNYAC Championships on Saturday and Vandenberg claimed first place in the 197-pound bracket. Vandenberg came off a bye to secure a pinfall in 0:22. That pin was followed with another in the semi-final round in 0:59. He was not done pinning his opponents however, as he did so in the finals matchup against Oneonta, this time, it took 4:21.
