SUNYAC Steps Up Against Nationally Ranked Teams

Oswego State forward Tyler Leimbrock, Buffalo State forward Elijah Cohen and Fredonia State goalie Mark Friesen have earned weekly recognition by the SUNYAC for their performance on the ice from Jan. 9-15.

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY PLAYER – Oswego
Tyler Leimbrock (Bolton, ONT), junior forward
Oswego State junior forward Tyler Leimbrock served as a catalyst to help the Lakers avenge an early-season loss to 10th-ranked Utica, 5-2, on Saturday. Leimbrock scored the game's first two goals with the first goal coming in a 4-on-4 situation and the second goal coming while Oswego State was short-handed. It was the first short-handed goal for the Lakers since Oct. 21. He also assisted the fourth goal of the contest, which was scored 31 seconds after Utica made it a two-goal game in the third period. The Lakers also defeated Curry 3-1 on Friday night. Leimbrock was an important member of a busy penalty-kill unit on the weekend that forced opponents to go a combined 0-for-16 with the extra skater.

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY ROOKIE – Buffalo State
Elijah Cohen (Peabody, MA), forward
Freshman Elijah Cohen netted a hat trick as Buffalo State exploded for six third-period goals to defeat host Johnson & Wales, 7-5, in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon. Five of the six goals were scored in a span of 4:27 to erase a 5-2 deficit, with Cohen picking up two of the goals. His other goal was the first of the game for the Bengals in the second period.

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY GOALIE – Fredonia
Mark Friesen (Calgary, Alberta), sophomore
Mark Friesen made 56 saves in two games against two nationally ranked opponents as the Blue Devils finished 1-1. Friesen stopped 19 shots in the 2-1 loss to #13 Elmira Tuesday night. Saturday afternoon, Friesen made 37 saves, including two key stops during a 5-on-3 advantage in the second period, as Fredonia completed a dramatic 3-2 overtime win against #6 Neumann. The Blue Devils improved to 7-6-3 and snapped Neumann’s eight-game winning streak. On the season, Friesen’s save percentage is 92.1 with a 2.62 goals against average.
