CORTLAND, N.Y. - Junior Michael Lysyj (Hillsborough, NJ/South Shore Kings) scored his second goal of the game one minute, 24 seconds into overtime as the Cortland men's hockey team defeated Morrisville St., 5-4, Friday night in SUNYAC action to hand head coach Joe Baldarotta his 300th career victory. Baldarotta became the 12th active and 22nd all-time Division III head coach to record 300 career wins. His overall record stands at 300-235-45.
Senior Joey Christiano (Rochester/Port Hope Predators) added a goal and an assist for Cortland (3-2, 2-2 SUNYAC), and seniors Ryan Durocher (Canton/Boston Bulldogs) and Jake Saville (Bellingham, WA/Marquette Rangers) each scored a goal. Junior Adam Bevilacqua (Toronto, ON/St. Norbert) contributed three assists, freshman Tyler Virgoe (Aurora, ON/Couchiching Tigers) recorded two assists and senior Peter Lompado (Staten Island/Minnesota St.-Mankato) and sophomore Joel Zangara (Buffalo/CD Selects) chipped in with one assist apiece. Senior goalie Mike Reilly (New York/Bismarck Bobcats) made 37 saves.
Senior Todd Hosmer (Scarborough, ON/SUNY Potsdam) led Morrisville St. (1-4, 1-4) with a pair of goals. Junior Alex Tillaart (Ashburn, ON/Port Hope Predators) and sophomore Jamie Nelson (Stratford, ON/Stratford Cullitons) also scored for the Mustangs. Seniors Tom Longland (Dunnville, ON/Pickering Panthers) and Geoff Matzel (Chittenango/NSA) collected two assists each, while three other players had one assist. Sophomore goalie Colin Breen (Waterloo, ON/Waterloo Siskins) stopped 26 shots.
The Mustangs took a 2-1 lead after the first 20 minutes. Nelson knocked in a loose puck at the left post at 13:13 before Durocher tied the game 50 seconds later when he scored from the slot right after a faceoff. Tillaart put Morrisville St. back in the lead at 17:22 with a one-time slap shot from the left point while the Mustangs had a two-man advantage.
The Red Dragons took a 4-2 lead with the first three goals of the second period. Lysyj started the streak at 2:27, scoring with a backhand on the power play after faking Breen in front of the goal. Christiano made it a 3-2 game at 7:13. With the two-man advantage, Christiano scored on a rebound of Bevilacqua's shot. Saville then netted a short-handed goal at 8:47 when he converted a breakaway off a pass from Virgoe.
Hosmer pulled the Mustangs within 4-3 with a wrist shot from the left side that found the top right corner at 12:37 of the second. He struck again from the same spot on the ice also with a wrist shot at 6:20 of the third period to knot the game at 4-all. Each team had a chance on the power play in the closing minutes of the third period. Cortland went on the man advantage at 16:41, but the chance lasted just 28 seconds after the Red Dragons took a penalty. Morrisville St. closed the third period with the power play for 1:19 but couldn't get a shot past Reilly.
Not long after Cortland returned to full strength in overtime, the Mustangs were whistled for their ninth penalty of the game setting up Lysyj's heroics. On the game-winning goal, Lysyj deflected Bevilacqua's pass past Breen and into the bottom corner of the goal for his third score of the season.
