Geneseo and Oswego Host Basketball Championships

Oswego and Geneseo will host the remainder of the SUNYAC Men's and Women's Basketball Playoffs with semifinal games on Friday and the finals on Saturday, with the winner earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
WOMEN'S GAMES
No. 2 Oneonta facing No. 3 New Paltz at 6pm on Friday, followed by No. 1 Geneseo taking on No. 4 Cortland at 8pm. The winners will advance to the championship game slated for 4pm on Saturday Feb. 26.
 
The semifinal pairings are the same as last year, when then-host Cortland defeated Geneseo in the semifinals and New Paltz in the finals to win the conference title, after the Hawks beat Oneonta in quadruple overtime.

6pm game: Oneonta (20-6) v New Paltz (16-10)
*Oneonta and New Paltz split the regular season series. New Paltz won, 63-51, when they met up on Jan. 21 at the Hawk Center, while Oneonta defended its home floor when it triumphed by a 71-61 final in Oneonta, N.Y., last Friday, Feb. 18.
 
*Friday marks the third post-season meeting between to the two teams. New Paltz won in 2010 in the semifinals and the other meeting was in the quarterfinals of 2004 when Oneonta prevailed.

*New Paltz has never won a conference championship and has only been in the title game once (2010), while the Red Dragons have two titles (1998 and 2001) in four championship appearances.

*Oneonta enters Friday night riding a four-game win streak, which ties Geneseo for the longest active streak in the conference.

* The Hawks are tied with Geneseo for the conference lead in team blocks per game with 4.65 (each has 121 total in 26 games played).

*Something will have to give on the glass. New Paltz leads the SUNYAC in offensive rebounds per game (19.27), while Oneonta leads the league in defensive rebounds per game (28.62).


8pm Game – Geneseo (23-3) v Cortland (19-6)

 * Geneseo defeated the Red Dragons twice during the regular season, 80-66 and 61-52.

*Geneseo is making its 21st straight tournament appearance and Cortland is making is 17th straight and 26th in the last 27 years.

*Friday marks the 12th meeting between the two teams in the post-season with Cortland holding an 8-3 advantage. The two teams have only met in the quarterfinals once and every other meeting was in the semifinals. Geneseo last defeated Cortland in the post-season in 1998 during the semifinals, 89-65.
 
*Cortland leads the conference is scoring offense at 73.1, while Geneseo holds its opponents to a league best 52.4 scoring defense.

*The Red Dragons are looking to advance to the league title game for the 11th time in head coach Jeannette Mosher’s 13 seasons. Cortland has won seven SUNYAC titles, including five under Mosher (1999, 2000, 2004, 2007 and 2010).

*Scott Hemer is hoping to take the Knights to the title game for the first time in his four-year career. Geneseo has not been to the championship since 1998. The Knights have won three championships overall (1993, 1995, 1996).
 
 
MEN'S GAMES
No. 2-Buffalo State faces No. 3-Plattsburgh at 6 p.m. and No. 1-Oswego State faces No. 4-Brockport.  The championship game will take place on Saturday at 4 p.m. . 

6pm game: Buffalo State (19-6) v Plattsburgh (17-9)
* The two regular season games were decided by four points and one point. Plattsburgh won on Jan. 22 80-76 and Buffalo State posted an overtime win 81-80 on Feb. 18.
 
*Buffalo State's current nine-game winning streak is the school's longest since winning 15 in a row in 1994-95. The Bengals will make their first appearance in the SUNYAC Semis since the 2002-03 season when they captured their last conference title.
 
*Friday marks the third post-season meeting between to the two teams. Plattsburgh won in the quarterfinals in 2007 and Buffalo State won in the 1995 finals.

*Plattsburgh has advanced to the finals five times since conference tournaments began in 1980, winning four titles all in the last five years under current head coach Tom Curle (2006, 2007, 2008, 2010).

* The Bengals and Cardinals are the two highest scoring teams in the conference with 84 points and 73.8 points per game.

* The two teams also average 39 rebounds per game. 
 

8pm Game – Oswego (23-3) v Brockport (14-12)
* The Lakers swept the season-series with Brockport, winning 74-71 at Brockport on Jan. 22, and again 69-61 at Oswego on Feb. 18.

*Oswego has ripped off 16 straight wins since dropping a 75-73 double-overtime decision at Oneonta on Jan. 11. That's the only conference loss this year for the Lakers.  
 
*The fourth-seeded Golden Eagles (14-12) are back in the SUNYAC semifinals for the fourth consecutive year, and ninth time in the last 11 years.

*Brockport, making its 12th straight tournament appearance, sports a 25-16 record all-time in the SUNYAC tournament, including a 7-8 mark in the semifinals. After starting off 1-5 in the semifinal round, the Golden Eagles have won six of their last nine semifinal matchups.

*Oswego and Brockport have squared off four times in the SUNYAC tournament, with Brockport winning three of the meetings. The Golden Eagles defeated Oswego in the semifinals two times, in 2000 and 2009, and capped their run to the 2002 SUNYAC championship by dispatching the Lakers 92-78. Oswego defeated Brockport in the postseason during the 2008 semifinals.

*The Golden Eagles have won SUNYAC championships four times, in 1994, 2001, 2002 and 2009, since the conference went to tournament play. Overall the Golden Eagles have seven conference titles.

*The Lakers, with a 14-16 record all-time in the SUNYAC tournament, have never won SUNYAC's, advancing to the championship game four times. Oswego fell to Plattsburgh in the 2008 finals, to Potsdam in 2005, to the Golden Eagles (92-78) in 2002 and to Geneseo in 1998.
