Women's Basketball Award Winner and All-Conference Announced

 

FREDONIA – The State University of New York Athletic Conference has announced the Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year awards for the 2010-11 women’s basketball season. The awards are voted on by the conference coaches.

The 2010-11 Player of the Year award goes to Cortland junior Brittany Cohen (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt). Cohen led the Red Dragons to a 13-5 conference record where they earned the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament based on a tie-break. She averaged 15.7 points and 6.6 assists in 17 league games and totaled 37 steals. Overall on the season she finished with 382 points, 153 assists and 49 steals. It is the third straight year the Player of the Year has been awarded to a Cortland Player and seventh time overall. Cohen joins a the distinguished Red Dragon list of Kiki Seago (1993), Michelle Ciquera (2004), Kaylin Van Dusen (2006), Sarah Cavanaugh (2007) and Jessica Laing (2009 and 2010).
 
Plattsburgh freshman Kathleen Payne (Goshen, NY/Goshen) led all freshmen in the SUNYAC in scoring and rebounding, averaging 10.9 points per game and 6.2 rebounds per conference game to get the Rookie of the Year honor. She is the first Plattsburgh player to ever earn the award.  Overall on the season her 273 points were most on the Cardinals and her 73.6 free-throw percentage was the best among freshman in the conference and ranked 10th overall. She led the Cardinals in scoring in nine games and in rebounding in five games. Plattsburgh doubled their win total from a year ago and earned three more wins in the conference.

 
SUNY Geneseo head coach Scott Hemer has been named Coach of the Year for the first time in his career. In his fourth season at the helm, he guided his team to a 17-1 conference record and the No. 1 seed in the SUNYAC tournament where the Knights won their first Championship since 1996. Geneseo is currently 25-3 on the season and earned the automatic bid into the NCAA tournament where they have been selected to host the first and second round and will face DeSales (19-8). Hemer is the third Geneseo coach to earn the SUNYAC coach of the year honor, joining Bob Guy (1992, 1994, 1995) and Kris Ruffo (2003).
