CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland men's ice hockey team scored three goals in a big second period en route to a 5-1 victory over Brockport in the first round of the SUNYAC tournament Wednesday night at Alumni Arena. The fourth-seeded Red Dragons (16-8-2) will head to Geneseo on Saturday, February 24, to take on the first-seeded Knights in the semifinals.
 
Senior Nate Berke (Williamsville/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) had two goals for the Red Dragons and his 14 goals this season are tied for the team lead. Anthony Bernardo (Hauppauge/P.A.L Junior Islander), Stephen Kyrkostas (Selden/Johnstown Tomahawks) and Evan Beaudry (Mississauga, ON/Kemptville 73's) each found the back of the net for the Red Dragons. Junior Domenic Settimo (East Meadow/P.A.L. Junior Islanders) assisted on two of Cortland's goals, with six other Red Dragons tallying an assist on the night. Senior Jack Riedell (Greensboro, NC/Charlotte Rush) shut down 32 of Brockport's 33 attempts on net.
 
Spencer Flansburg was the lone goal scorer for the Golden Eagles, with Scott Ramaekers and Josh Grund assisting on the effort. Goalie Dylan Wiemer saved 30 of Cortland's 35 shots on goal.
 
Kyrkostas scored 3:16 into the game to give Cortland the lead. The Red Dragons scored their first of three goals in the second period with 2:41 elapsed when Bernardo beat Wiemer to give Cortland a 2-0 lead. Berke and Beaudry extended the lead to four, scoring 2:16 apart toward the end of the period.
 
Flansburg scored with nine minutes to go in the final frame, cutting the Golden Eagle deficit to three. Brockport (8-14-4) pulled Wiemer with 3:43 to play, but an empty-netter from Berke 42 seconds later sealed the game for the Red Dragons as Cortland advanced to the semifinals for the second time in three seasons.
