Red Dragons Top Medaille, 5-2, in NCAA Men's Soccer First Round

LANCASTER, PA. – Junior Jack Coleman (Newark Valley/Maine-Endwell) scored four goals to lead the nationally 14th-ranked Cortland men's soccer team to a 5-2 victory over Medaille Saturday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Div. III Tournament hosted by Franklin & Marshall.

The Red Dragons (13-5-2) advanced to the second round and face the host Diplomats Sunday at 3 p.m. The Mavericks ended their season at 12-2-6.

Sophomore Matt Shultz (Oneonta) added a goal and two assists, and sophomore Cade Denlinger (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown Area) collected an assist. Junior goalie Kyle Barsic (Amityville) made five saves in his first start of the season.

Ander Castillo tallied both goals for Medaille. Goalie David Mighten registered two saves.

Castillo gave the Mavericks the lead in the 20th minute, but Shultz assisted on Coleman goals in the 29th and 31st minutes to put Cortland ahead, 2-1, at the half.

Coleman tallied his third goal in the 48th minute, but Castillo struck again in the 63rd minute to make it a 3-2 game. Shultz scored an insurance goal in the 79th minute, and Coleman completed the scoring just 1:39 later for the 5-2 final.
