LANCASTER, PA. – Sophomore Hans Schumacher (Owls Head/Franklin Academy) converted during the eighth-round of penalty kicks to send the nationally 14th-ranked Cortland men's soccer team to the third round of the NCAA Div. III Tournament after the Red Dragons and seventh-ranked Franklin & Marshall played to a 3-3 double-overtime tie.

Cortland (13-5-3) won the penalty-kick shootout, 7-6, and advanced to face the winner of Stevens Institute and Rowan in the third round next Saturday at a site to be determined. The Diplomats ended their season at 13-2-5.

Junior Jack Coleman (Newark Valley/ Maine-Endwell) and sophomores Cade Denlinger (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown Area) and Matt Shultz (Oneonta) each tallied a goal and an assist for Cortland. In his second start of the season, junior goalie Kyle Barsic (Amityville) made six saves.

Sean Lipschutz and Philip Monos each scored goals for Franklin & Marshall. Shay Adamson, Nathan Schlessinger and Koa Kaliebe collected one assist apiece. Goalie Sam Farrell stopped three shots.

The Diplomats took a 1-0 lead on an own goal in the 36th minute when a Cortland defender's attempt to head away a serve in the box went into the goal. Lipschutz made it a 2-0 score less than four minutes later, scoring on a one-time shot from the right side on a loose ball after a collision in the box.

Denlinger put Cortland on the scoreboard just 54 seconds into the second half when he one-timed a shot at the left post on a cross from Shultz from the right side. Shultz then tied the game in the 70th minute, taking a through ball from Coleman on the left side, cutting into the box and beating Farrell one-on-one.

In the 79th minute, Coleman gave the Red Dragons a 3-2 lead with his team-high 12th goal of the season and fifth in two days. Denlinger fed a pass to the left side to Coleman who broke in on Farrell all alone and slipped a shot past the goalkeeper. With time winding down, Franklin & Marshall tied the game. Kaliebe sent a long free kick into Cortland's defensive half. Schlessinger headed the ball down to Monos, who struck a low shot from the top of the box inside the left post sending the game into overtime.

Each team generated two shots during the mandatory two 10-minute overtime periods with each goalie making a routine save, sending the outcome to penalty kicks.

The Diplomats went first, converting their first four attempts. Cortland was denied on its first try and trailed, 4-3, heading into the fifth round. With a chance to advance with a make for Franklin & Marshall, Barsic made a save on the Diplomats' fifth attempt, and junior Mateo Marra (Ossining) kept Cortland's chances alive with his make on the Red Dragons' fifth attempt.

In a second round of sudden-victory kicks, each team converted its first two tries. Barsic then denied Franklin & Marshall's third attempt, and Schumacher sent the Red Dragons onto the third round with his conversion.
