New Paltz Wins 2010 Tennis Championship; Bruley Named Coach of the Year

 

FREDONIA, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) crowned champions in six individual flights, three double flights and one team champion on Sunday afternoon at the conference tournament in Manlius, NY at the Eastside Racquet Club.
 
The New Paltz Hawks won the team title for the fourth time in the history of the program and for the first time since 2007, dethroning the Geneseo Knights from a two year stand on the top of the pedestal. The Hawks captured three singles titles and one title in the doubles action to finished with 42 points throughout the course of the three-day event, while second-place SUNY Geneseo compiled 36 points winning two singles flights and two doubles titles.
 
SUNY Cortland and SUNY Oneonta tied for third with 18 points apiece, while The College at Brockport, SUNY Fredonia and SUNY Plattsburgh all earned a share of fifth with four points. SUNY Oswego rounded out the eight-team field.
 
New Paltz Head Coach Rob Bruley was honored as the SUNYAC Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career, previously winning the honor in 2002, 2004 and 2006.
 
Senior Lindsey Garyn (Melville, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) was a double-winner for the Hawks, capturing the third singles title and teaming with senior Stephanie Schara (Huntington, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) to win the first doubles title. Garyn cruised to the third singles championship defeating her competition 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals, sweeping the semifinals 6-0, 6-0 and then posted straight sets of 6-1 to defeat Oneonta's Carly Smith (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton).
 
Schara and Garyn won the title at No. 1 doubles, defeating their counterparts from Oneonta, 6-4, 6-4. This marked the first doubles championship for this Hawk tandem, but it was the second time Schara won a doubles title, previously winning third doubles in 2007.
 
Sophomore Kayla DiPaulo (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and freshman Paige Munroe (Ann Arbor, MI/Ann Arbor Pioneer) won individual titles at fourth and sixth singles, respectively for New Paltz. DiPaulo faced her toughest competition of the tournament in the finals against Geneseo junior Katie Gayvert (Fairport, NY/Fairport), who won the fifth singles crown in 2009. DiPaulo was undefeated at 6-0 against conference opponents coming into the tournament to earn the number seed, and only lost one game during the quarterfinal (6-0, 6-0) and the semifinal round (6-1, 6-0). In the finals, DiPaulo and Gayvert battled it out point for point with DiPaulo prevailing in a tiebreaker to win the match 6-1, 5-7,7-6 (3).
 
Munroe was seeded second in the sixth singles flight and faced the No. 1 seed Katie Talbot (Endwell, NY/Maine Endwell), a sophomore on the Geneseo squad. Both players defeated their competition by scores of 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and then 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals before encountering the tough matchup in the finals. Munroe fought back to force a third set and win the title 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
 
The top seed in the fifth singles flight, Geneseo sophomore Sarah Shields (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris) defeated No. 2-seeded Alli Esposito (Bellmore, NY/John F. Kennedy) of New Paltz, 6-1, 6-1, to capture her second singles titles in two years after winning the sixth singles crown in 2009. Shields teamed up with Gayvert to defend their third doubles title and prevailed 6-4, 6-1 over Esposito and Munroe.
 
Geneseo freshman Lucy Mehrayben (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) was also a double-winner for the Knights as she won second singles 3-0, injury default to New Paltz's Montana Wilson (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay), the 2009 defending champion, and then teamed with Melissa Baker (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) to win second doubles by injury default to New Paltz.
 
SUNY Cortland sophomore Loraine Jelinek (Homer/home schooled) upset top-seeded and defending champion Geneseo junior Monica Vieth (Williamsville/Williamsville East) in the first singles flight final 7-5, 1-6, 6-2. Jelinek opened singles play with a three-set upset over second-seeded Danielle Browarski (Colonie, NY/Colonie) of Oneonta 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 in the quarterfinals and then posted a 6-0, 6-2 win in the semifinals. It is the first individual title for Jelinek and the first time Cortland has won the first singles flight since a four year stretch from 2002-2005.
