SUNYAC announces 2014 men's soccer honors

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announces its men's soccer All-Conference Teams and individual awards as voted on by the conference coaches. Oneonta's Dylan Williams (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) and Cory Santangelo (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) and have earned the Huntley Parker Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. The Coach of the Year award went to Oneonta's Head Coach, Iain Byrne.

Williams took home the Player of the Year award. The Monroe-Woodbury native was named to the SUNYAC All-Conference First Team for the second consecutive season, while helping the Red Dragons to an 18-0-2 record, and the 2014 SUNYAC regular season and tournament titles. Heading into the NCAA tournament, the junior midfielder has tallied 22 points so far on the season, with eight goals and six assists and has averaged 1.16 points per game.

The Huntley Parker Player of the Year Award is named after the highly successful Soccer Coach at Brockport. Parker coached soccer for 14 years, winning the SUNYAC conference twice (1961-1968) and sharing the championship in 1970.

Corey Santangelo was named the SUNYAC Rookie of the Year. The freshman forward helped the undefeated and highly ranked Red Dragons with 12 goals and 25 points on the season, averaging 1.25 points per game. Santangelo who hails from Sayville, New York and attended Sayville High School prior to joining the Oneonta program, was also named to the SUNYAC All-Conference Third Team.

The Coach of the Year went to Oneonta's Iain Byrne. Coach Byrne has led the Red Dragon program to an 18-0-2 record so far this season, capturing the 2014 SUNYAC regular season and tournament titles. His squad fought off a tough Cortland side in a thrilling SUNYAC championship match, taking a 2-1 victory, and clinching an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament. It was the program's third time in the last four years that they took the conference title and its eight overall. Oneonta has not been beaten in SUNYAC regular season play since 2012. Byrne has been at the helm of the men's soccer program for 12 years. He came to the States in 1986 from South Africa after a distinguished playing career. Prior to joining the Oneonta staff in 1997, Byrne spent a decade directing youth soccer organizations in Florida and Georgia.
