SUNYAC names 2017 women's soccer award winners

CORTLAND, N.Y.- The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) is excited to announce the 2017 women's soccer All-Conference teams as well as Offensive, Defensive, Rookie, and Coach of the Year. These awards were nominated and voted on by conference coaches.

Offensive Player of the Year - Madeline Saccocio, Plattsburgh

Saccocio, the senior striker for the Cardinals, had a tremendous 2017 campaign. The Schenectady native led the offensive force for Plattsburgh, scoring sixteen of the team's forty-four total goals this season. Saccocio tacked on five assists, good for a fifth-place tie in the conference. Her thirty-seven total points were second overall in the SUNYAC.  She did not lack a clutch factor; five of her goals were game winners and propelled Plattsburgh to a 13-5-2 overall record (6-1-2 in-conference). In the conference semifinals, Saccocio came up big once again, scoring an insurance goal late in the game to secure Plattsburgh's 3-0 win over Cortland. Her Cardinal squad came up short in the conference finals, falling to the Geneseo Knights. Saccocio was named first team All-Conference for her efforts this season.

Defensive Player of the Year -  Leah Greene, Geneseo

This season, Greene was a defensive stalwart for the Knights. The senior, a native of Cortlandt Manor, anchored a defense that only allowed nine goals in nineteen games (0.46 GAA). Over this same span, Greene and the Knights shutout their opponents eleven times, good for best in the conference. In the semifinals, she led the Geneseo defense against Oneonta, an offense that averaged 2.11 goals per game, and limited them to a single goal. In the SUNYAC championship game, Greene and her defensive unit were able to shut out a Plattsburgh offense that scored three goals in their previous game. For her efforts, Greene was awarded a spot on the All-Tournament team and was named to the first-team All-Conference list.

Rookie of the Year - Ellie Gregory, Geneseo

Gregory (Commack, NY) started off her college career in emphatic fashion  The rookie midfielder racked up twelve total points on four goals and four assists. She was fourth on her team in both categories, an impressive feat for someone in their first season of play. Gregory's best performance of the season was perhaps the matchup against conference opponent Potsdam on 10/20. She assisted on the first goal of the game and later added a goal of her own to give Geneseo an important win down the stretch. In the conference championship game against Plattsburgh, Gregory contributed an assist in the Knights' 4-0 victory. She was the only freshman named to the second-team All-Conference list.

Coach of the Year - Mark Misiak, Potsdam

In his seventh season at the helm, Misiak led his Bears squad to their best record (12-6-2) in program history. His team went 5-4-1 in conference play, a record that seeded them fourth in the SUNYAC tournament. The Bears suffered a difficult first round loss to Oneonta in overtime.  Misiak's leadership this season found three of his players on SUNYAC All-Conference Teams.
