
Ascanio and Nochowitz Take Home SUNYAC Baseball Athlete of the Week Honors
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - New Paltz's Michael Ascanio is this week's SUNYAC Baseball Athlete of the Week, while Cortland's Matthew Nochowitz is the Pitcher of the Week.
Ascanio carried the Hawks to a perfect 4-0 week, highlighted by a prolific weekend against his former team on the road Friday and Saturday. In a 14-6 non-conference victory over Vassar Wednesday, he added an RBI base hit with two runs scored and a stolen base. In Game 1 against the Cardinals, Ascanio went 2-for-4 with two runs, three RBI and two stolen bases in an 8-1 victory. The Hawks trailed early in Game 2, but Ascanio brought momentum back on his team's side, as he smacked an RBI base hit to get SUNY New Paltz's first run aboard. Ascanio finished the game going 4-for-5 with two runs, a double, three RBI, a walk and two stolen bases. He capped his weekend by going 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, a walk and a stolen base as the Hawks rolled to a 14-2 eight-inning win over the Cardinals. On the week, Ascanio produced nine hits, eight runs, two doubles, nine RBI with two walks and six stolen bases, while hitting .474 with an on-base-percentage of .545 and slugging percentage of .579. He was perfect in the field, as the reigning All-Region gold glover made nine total catches and nine put outs for a 1.000 fielding percentage manning center field.
Nochowitz allowed four hits, one walk and one run and struck out a career-high 13 batters in just five and two thirds innings during Cortland's 6-5 win over Oneonta. He left with the lead but received a no decision after Oneonta tied the game in the seventh.
