SUNYAC Unveils Season Awards for Field Hockey

CORTLAND, N.Y.- After a remarkable season, the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) is proud to announce the annual field hockey awards. These awards include Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year, and All-Conference Teams voted on by the conference coaches.

Offensive Player of the Year: Gabby Stein (Sr.), Forward, Endwell, N.Y., Cortland

Stein closed out her incredible field hockey career at SUNY Cortland with a strong senior season where she netted 16 goals, bringing her career total to 63. This season, her overall point total second in the conference with 45, .  Stein's offensive prowess powered Cortland to a 14-4 overall record and a #1 seed going in the SUNYAC Championship.  

Most Goals in a Game- 4 (10/1/16 vs. Brockport)

Defensive Player of the Year: Morgan Maley (Jr.), Midfielder,  Williamsville, N.Y., Geneseo

Maleyhelped bolster a Geneseo defense that had the second lowest Goals Against Average in the SUNYAC (1.95).  Her strong play propelled Geneseo to a 10-9 overall record (4-2 in conference), good for the third seed in the SUNYAC Championship. The Knights were able to win against New Paltz in the first round (1-0) and defeated Oneonta in overtime, 3-2, for their first SUNYAC title since 2010.

Rookie of the Year: Sophia Urrutia (Fr.), Forward, Westbury, N.Y., New Paltz

 In her first year of SUNYAC competition, Urrutia (Westbury/Carle Place) was a valuable contributor for her team.  She started all 17 of the games she played in this season, scoring two goals.  In the assist category, Urrutia was tied for sixth overall in the SUNYAC with seven helpers.  Her play propelled New Paltz to a 9-9 record (5-1 conference) and a #2 seeding in the SUNYAC Championship.

Coach of the Year: Jessica Seren, Geneseo 

Seren is awarded Coach of the Year for the third time in nine seasons at the helm of Geneseo field hockey.  This year, Seren guided her team to an 11-9 record overall and 4-2 in conference play to secure the third seed going into the SUNYAC championship. In the first round, Geneseo was able to defeat #2 New Paltz, 1-0.  In the championship match, Seren and her team defeated Oneonta, 3-2, in overtime to capture thier second title overall and first since 2010.  The Knights will face Keene St. (N.H) in the first round of NCAA Tournament on November 9.
