Geneseo Advances Past Plattsburgh, 7-5

The Geneseo men's lacrosse team won their sixth straight game and returns to the SUNYAC title contest after a one-year hiatus as the Blue Knights defeated visiting Plattsburgh (11-7), 7-5 in a SUNYAC tournament semifinal game. First year attack Steven Cregan scored a goal and three assists to pace Geneseo, senior attack Brendan Kurpis netted three goals and junior d-middie John Felix dished a pair of assists. Junior midfielder Tim Burgess, sophomore midfielder John Wettack and sophomore d-middie Joe Cicio scored one goal each for the Blue Knights.

Plattsburgh responded to a regular-season ending 16-10 loss to Geneseo on Saturday by scoring three times in the first quarter on the way to a 3-1 lead. Geneseo's Kurpis scored 22 seconds into the second and again on the man-up with 11:48 left in the frame to tie the score at three. The teams alternated goals throughout the remainder of the second quarter with Burgess tying the game at five for Geneseo with 1:07 to play in the half.

In the second half, Geneseo's defense of seniors Derek Drance and Tom Gordon, sophomores Kyle Johnson and Jules Zidi, juniors Bob Mascia and Kyle Kerrigan, Felix, Cicio, sophomore d-middie Connor Fedge and junior goalie Michael Greubel held the Cardinals scoreless. Wettack scored at 13:04 of the third quarter and Cicio scored from Felix at 10:35 of the fourth for the only goals in the second half. Greubel made 11 saves to post the win in nets for Geneseo (6-7).

Plattsburgh's Tim Lawrence had a goal and an assist and Gordie Gehring made nine saves in taking the loss.

Geneseo travels to take on top-seeded and nationally second-ranked Cortland, a 20-3 semifinal winner over fourth-seeded Oneonta, in the championship game on Saturday, May 5 at 3:30 p.m. The Red Dragons and Blue Knights faced each other in the championship game eight straight years from 2003-2010, with Geneseo winning in 2004 and 2007.
