Oswego Women's Ice Hockey Out Jump Kangaroos in SUNYAC Semifinal
Oswego Sports Information Department
OSWEGO, N.Y. – Oswego Women's Hockey returned to home ice this afternoon to host the Canton Kangaroos in the semi-final round of the SUNYAC playoffs. After merely sweeping the Cortland Red Dragons in the last weekend of the regular season, the Lakers came out looking to make a statement. A dominant start to the opening period would catapult the Lakers into Canton's zone where they would stay for much of the first period. Unsatisfied with a scoreless effort in the first period, the Lakers came out firing on all cylinders in the early moments of the 2nd, determined to put the first tally on the board. And they did just that, heading into the final frame with a promising 2-0 lead. A hot third period start by the Kangaroos would have Oswego minding their Ps and Qs early on, but it did not take long for them to settle back into their commanding rhythm. A back-and-forth period would award Canton a messy goal in the last fleeting minutes, but Oswego would still manage to pull out a 2-1 semi-final win over the Kangaroos, securing their spot in the SUNYAC championship.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A strong opening faceoff win by sophomore Erika Parenti would catapult the Lakers into Canton's zone almost immediately. The beginning minutes of play would consist of Oswego applying heavy offensive pressure, making it difficult for the Kangaroos to break it out of their zone. As the first period continued to unfold, the Lakers began to generate consistent opportunities on net, but all would be collected by opposing net minder Alyssa Townsley. Oswego's dominant start would persist into the latter half of the period, but the Roos responded well gaining a few solid line rushes and getting shots through to the pads of veteran goaltender Lexi Levy. As the 1st period clock began to tick down, a last-minute surge from both teams would elevate the vigor heading into the second period
Unsatisfied with a scoreless effort in the first period, the Lakers came out firing on all cylinders in the early moments of the 2nd. Off the faceoff, a quick rush and shot by senior defenseman Rylee Preston would waste no time putting Canton back on defense. In the following minutes, a connected passing play between Lauren Schell and Rachel Corbett would generate a far-side rebound that would collect and put top shelf by sophomore Jenna Majewski, giving Oswego a 1-0 lead at the 2:05 mark. A roughing penalty would be charged to Kangaroo Bailey Cote, awarding the Lakers the first advantage of the game just less than a minute later. Despite having multiple quality scoring chances, Oswego would be kept at bay by an aggressive Canton penalty kill. Hungry for another tally before the third, the Lakers kept their foot on the gas, incessantly keeping the Roos on their toes with a range of shots and passing plays. A solid breakout by Oswego would send Rachel Corbett up the left side of the ice all by herself. A hefty knee-high shot from the outside of the dots would flutter by left pad of Townsley into the bottom corner of the net, improving the scoreline to 2-0 at 13:16. With the second period buzzer drawing near, the Lakers continued to churn out offense, entering the final frame with a promising 2-0 lead.
A fiery start by Canton would keep Oswego on their Ps and Qs in the starting minutes of the third period, but it did not take long for them to settle back into their commanding rhythm. A tripping penalty would send Helen Vandamme to the box at 4:03, giving the Roos their first powerplay of the game. A lockdown defensive effort by the Lakers' penalty kill unit would keep Canton scoreless as play returned to even strength. Determined to lessen their deficit, the Kangaroos continued to fight back, taking every shooting chance when they could. After a brief timeout, Canton would pull Alyssa Townsley from their net in hopes of generating some magic with an extra player, and they did just that with just under 2 minutes to play. A heavy shot from a Roo on the outside would produce a large scuffle in front of Oswego's net would result in Chamonix Jackson burying Canton's only goal of the match on the backdoor. With just 1 goal separating the game from an overtime period, the final two minutes of the period were extremely physical, but the Lakers managed to pull out a 2-1 victory over the SUNY Canton Kangaroos, sending them to the SUNYAC Championship.
