Women's Lacrosse Award Winners and All-Conference Announced

FREDONIA - The State University of New York Athletic Conference has announced the Coach of the Year, Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year awards for the 2011 women’s lacrosse season in addition to the All-conference teams. The awards are voted on by the conference coaches.

Cortland junior midfielder Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga, NY/Onondaga) has been selected as the 2011 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Year and third-year head coach Kathy Taylor has been chosen as the league's Coach of the Year in a vote of the league's coaches. Geneseo's Caroline Buonocore (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) has been named the SUNYAC Rookie of the Year.

Abbott is a three-time first-team all-conference selection and becomes the 13th player in Cortland history to be voted the Player of the Year. The junior led Cortland to its 13th straight conference title and automatic NCAA Div. III playoff berth. Abbott has started all 19 games and leads the team with 110 points on 49 goals and 61 assists. She has also totaled 42 groundballs, 80 draw controls and caused 30 turnovers.

Taylor earned SUNYAC Coach of the Year honors the first time in her career. In her third season, she guided her team to a current 18-1 record and a No. 1 seed in the conference tournament with a perfect league record of 8-0. Cortland won its 13th straight conference title and a trip to the NCAA championship where they will host Keene St. in a first round game on May 11.  Taylor is the second Red Dragon coach to earn the honor as former coach Cynthia Wetmore was recognized two times (2000, 2006).

Buonocore led Geneseo to a 12-4 mark as the Knights made their third straight SUNYAC Tournament appearance with a 5-3 conference record. She started all 16 games en route to becoming Geneseo’s first SUNYAC Rookie of the Year in women’s lacrosse. Buonocore, a first team All-Conference selection, etched her named in the Geneseo record book twice this season as she finished with a single season record of 73 goals on her way to 78 points. She also set the school record for goals in a game by a freshman with eight as Geneseo defeated nationally-ranked William Smith, 16-15.
