Brockport Falls to Defending National Champs in NCAA Second Round

The College at Brockport Womens Lacrosse team finished its season with a 16-4 loss to Franklin and Marshall University, the defending Division III National Champions, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Lancaster, PA, on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles (13-4) advanced to the second round by virtue of a 16-9 victory against Rowan University last Wednesday. Brockport earned an at large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament for its first national appearance.

The Golden Eagles took control early as senior Melissa Hill (Rochester, NY/Brighton) scored 59 seconds into the first half from freshman Sarah Brown (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) on a close shot from the right wing. The Diplomats tied the game at 2:49 but sophomore Dayna Piraino (Syracuse, NY/Henninger) scored from the left side at 3:50 to give Brockport a 2-1 lead.  Franklin and Marshall evened the score on a free position at 5:05 before the Diplomats were forced to tighten the defense as Brockport was more disciplined in the offensive end but were unable to score on a shot by Carly Motondo (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) that was nicely saved by Franklin and Marshall.

F&M used a very settled and dominate offense to scored eight unanswered goals to command a 9-2 halftime lead. The Diplomats tried to score late in the first half and had a shot deflect off the post and then a save by junior goalie Jamie Kaminsky (Oakdale, NY/Sayville).

The Diplomats continued to control the ball in the second half as they scored two goals in the first 1:15 of action. Brown picked up her second assist of the game when she found Karen Bianchi (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) on the right side with 20:12 to play for a 13-3 score. Freshman Kaila Mcguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) scored unassisted for her 15th goal of the season with 2:53 remaining to complete the scoring.

Kaminsky made four saves in net for the Golden Eagles.
