Brockport Volleyball Keeps Season Alive With Win Over Gallaudet

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Brockport women's volleyball team moved on to the second round of the NCAA tournament Friday night by defeating Gallaudet University three sets to one. The team will now face Ithaca College at 5 p.m. tomorrow in Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.

Gallaudet got off to a hot start in the first set, opening up a 7-3 lead after a few Brockport attacking errors. That changed quickly though, as the team used motivation from the home crowd to win six of the next seven points and reclaim a 9-8 edge. Gallaudet was able to regain the lead at 18-15, but as they've done so often this season, the Golden Eagles closed the set strong, winning 10 of the final twelve points capped off by back-to-back kills from Brianna Richardson and Sam Holdredge.

Gallaudet took an early lead again in the second, but this time were able to hold it, taking the frame by a final score of 25-23. Emma Stoltz killed four balls in the frame, but it was to no avail as the Bison took the set after a kill from Camryn Skari.

The third set was a different story, as Brockport never trailed, jumping out to an early 9-1 lead. They kept that pace up, using contributions from all of their starters to win the stanza 25-10. Jamie Schlesinger led the team offensively in the set, killing four balls including the game winning kill off the hands of Kathleen Irwin.

It was much of the same in the fourth, as the Golden Eagles once again took an early lead at 4-0 and held on to that lead for the entirety of the set. The service game led the charge for the team in this set, as they combined for six aces, five of which came from the duo of Maddy Taylor and Kathleen IrwinEmily Flohr put the match away with a service ace of her own, one of three on the day for the junior, giving Brockport the 25-16 set victory, advancing them to the next round.

Outside hitters Holdredge and Stoltz combined for 28 kills in the contest, with Richardson and Schlesinger following that up with nine apiece. Schlesinger was the most consistent Brockport hitter on the day, swinging at a .316 clip while also digging up 17 balls.

Those 17 digs trailed only Irwin, who recorded 20 digs from the libero position. Noelle Poloncarz, Holdredge, and Taylor all recorded double-digit digs as well.

The match tomorrow against Ithaca will be the second time the two teams have squared off this season, with the first coming on the opening game of the season where Brockport won 3-0. BSG will once again have free tickets available for Brockport students.
