SUNYAC announces 2016 Men's Lacrosse Awards

The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has announced the 2016 Men's Lacrosse All-Conference teams as well as the Coach, Player and Rookie of the Year awards as voted on by the conference coaches. The Player of the Year was given to Zach Hopps of Cortland, the Rookie of the Year was awarded to Joey Panariello of Cortland and the Paul Rose Coach of the Year selection was Ben Wineburg of Brockport.
 
Zach Hopps took the Men's Lacrosse Player of the Year honors for the second consecutive year. The senior attacker tallied 69 points on 42 goals and 27 assists in 18 games, helping Cortland to a 13-5 and 6-0 conference record. Hopps led the Cortland squad to the SUNYAC tournament title and was named to the All-Tournament team.
 
Cortland's Joey Panariello earned the Rookie of the Year honor for 2016. The freshman had 30 points for the Red Dragons, with 20 goals and 10 assists. The Islip, NY native appeared in all 18 games for Cortland was fourth on the team in points. Cortland will head to the NCAA tournament and play Western New England in Springfield Mass, Wednesday, May 11, at 4 p.m.
 
Coach Wineburg is in his 16th season as the Golden Eagles head coach. The Golden Eagles finished with a 12-4 record and 4-2 in SUNYAC play. He led the Golden Eagles to the SUNYAC championship this past weekend, just barely losing to the Cortland Red Dragons with seconds left. This is Coach Wineburg's first-ever SUNYAC Coach of the Year honor.
