Red Dragons Fall at #4 Tufts in NCAA Second Round

MEDFORD, MASS. – The nationally fourth-ranked Tufts men's lacrosse team scored 14 of the game's final 15 goals to break a 5-5 second-quarter tie and earned a 19-6 win versus Cortland Saturday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Div. III Men's Lacrosse Tournament. The Jumbos improved to 18-2 with the win, while the Red Dragons had their season end at 14-6.

Sophomore Devin Phelps (Chittenango) led Cortland with two goals and one assist. Sophomore Nate Beresovoy (LaFayette) and freshman Joey Panariello (Islip) each recorded one goal and one assist, seniors Zach Hopps (Akwesasne/Massena) and Pat Baldwin (Alpharetta, GA) netted one goal apiece and senior Conner Johnston (Homer) chipped in with one assist.

Sophomore goalie Joe Scalise (Fairport) made 10 saves in 51:21, and freshman Cooper Brown (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) stopped three shots in 8:39. Baldwin won 10 faceoffs and collected seven ground balls.

John Uppgren scored a game-high nine points on five goals and four assists to pace the Tufts offense. Zach Richman also tallied five goals, Austin Carbone recorded three goals and one assist and Ben Andreycak contributed two goals and two assists. Garrett Clarke and Jake Gillespie each had one goal and two assists, and A.J. Enchill and Connor Bilby notched one goal apiece.

Goalie Alex Salazar registered 14 saves for the Jumbos. Conor Helfrich won 16-of-25 faceoffs and secured 10 ground balls, while Tyler Olney collected four ground balls and Cam Irwin scooped up three.

Tufts led just 4-3 at the end of the first quarter before the Red Dragons knotted the game at 5-5 early in the second quarter. From that point, the Jumbos closed the first half with five straight goals for a 10-5 lead at the break.

The advantage grew to 14-5 late in the third quarter when Baldwin stopped the nine-goal run with his goal six seconds after winning a faceoff. Tufts, however, netted the final five goals of the game for the 19-6 final.
