Men's Soccer Season Ends in Overtime Thriller

The College at Brockport Men’s Soccer team saw its season end in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament for the second consecutive season as the Merchant Marine Academy scored a 3-2 win over the Golden Eagles in overtime Saturday night at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, NJ.

Brockport (14-3-3) scored early in the game as Brian Duffy (Hilton, NY/Hilton) as he headed in a crossing pass from the foot of Christian Tychostup (Mayfield, NY/Mayfield) after Chris Auth (East Patchogue, NY/Bellport) sent a pass into the corner of the field.

Early in the second half, Merchant Marine (12-2-5) scored to tie the game but Brockport regained the lead eight minutes later as Chris O’Gorman (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) knocked in a rebound after a Mike Breman (Merrick, NY/Bellmore-JFK) shot was saved by the Merchant Marine goalie.

Later in the second half, a goal by Brockport that would have given the Golden Eagles a 3-1 lead was disallowed due to an offsides call.

The score remained 2-1 until the final minutes when goalie Joe Marino (Rochester, NY/McQuaid) was whistled for a foul in the 18-yard box giving Merchant Marine a penalty kick. The Mariniers converted the kick to tie the score sending the game into overtime.

Seven minutes into the extra session, Merchant Marine scored the game winner advancing on to the sectional round of the NCAA Tournament.
