Cortland Claims Women's Basketball Championship

 

There was no place like home over the weekend as the top-seeded Cortland women defeated New Paltz, 51-45, to capture the SUNYAC Championship.
  
The Red Dragons finished 17-1 against SUNYAC opponents during the season   Cortland’s Jessica Laing (Bloomville/South Kortright) was named the MVP of the women’s tournament. She recorded her 23rd double-double of the season by scoring 15 points and grabbing 16 rebounds in the championship game. Laing was joined on the All-Tournament team by teammate Micki Volpini (Newfield/Newfield), Geneseo’s Brittany Finkle (Windsor/Windsor/BCC), New Paltz’s Kristen Caban (Staten Island/Saint Joseph Hill Academy) and Alexandra McCullough (Delmar/Bethlehem) and Oneonta’s Erika Puffer (Unadilla/Unatego).
 
The Cortland women will face the University of Rochester in a first-round game on Friday, March 5 at 8 p.m. at Rochester.
