SUNYAC Debuts in Women's Basketball NCAA Div. III East Regional Rankings

The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) had four of the six teams ranked in the first release of the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball East Regional Rankings for 2010-11, as announced Wednesday by the NCAA.

SUNY Geneseo sits at No. 3, New Paltz debuted as No. 4, while SUNY Oneonta and SUNY Cortland rank fifth and sixth, respectively. Medaille College of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) holds the No. 1 ranking for the East Region, while the University of Rochester of the University Athletic Association (UAA) ranks second.

The Knights are 16-2 overall and have an unbeaten 11-0 record in the conference. They are currently on a 12-game win streak and are outscoring their opponents by an average of almost 10 points. All five starters for the Knights are averaging over 8.5 points per game as they carry a 13-1 record against teams in the region.

The Hawks (11-7, 9-2 SUNYAC) have been cruising as of late, triumphing in eight of their past 10 games. During that span, they have engineered a pair of two four-game winning streaks. They have gone 11-5 against teams in-region, including a 2-1 mark against those ranked in the East Region.

Oneonta is 14-2 against teams in the region and is currently third in the league standings with a 9-3 record. The Red Dragons lead the conference in scoring defense (54.5pts) and in defensive rebounds (29.2).

Cortland stands at 13-4 in the season and has four players averaging over 12 points per game as the team leads the league in scoring (73.5). The Red Dragons are 7-3 in their last ten games, with all three loses coming against Geneseo, New Paltz and Oneonta.

All four teams are undefeated on their home court against conference opponents this season and have combined for an overall home court record of 31-2. Geneseo is the only ranked team that plays at home this weekend and will try to keep their steak alive as they host Potsdam and Plattsburgh. New Paltz and Oneonta will travel to western New York to take on Fredonia and Buffalo State, while Cortland will travel north for one game against Oswego.
