Fredonia State hosts NGWSD event

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Members of a local grade school girls’ basketball team spent a recent afternoon on the Fredonia State campus during observation of National Girls and Women In Sports Day.

The Northern Chautauqua Catholic School jayvees were guests Jan. 28 of the Fredonia State Department of Athletics & Recreation. The NCCS girls played a short scrimmage during halftime of the Blue Devil women's home game vs. New Paltz.

After the game, the Department of Athletics & Recreation hosted a reception for the NCCS team where players from the women's basketball team discussed what it is like to be a college student-athlete.

"I remember what it felt like at that age," freshman guard Samantha Johnson said, "to be excited about playing sports and thinking about what it would be like to play in college. It's important for young girls to hold on to this and for us as collegiate athletes to do what we can to support this and to help keep them excited and passionate."

"It's important for us to be role models for young girls in the community both on and off of the court," senior forward Liz Wierbinski said. "It's also really important for us to give back as much as we can."

Added sophomore forward Nicole Lindstrom: "It's a good feeling to know that we're making a difference for these girls. We were in their shoes at one point."

National Girls and Women in Sports Day began 1987 as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player Florence Hyman for her athletic achievements and work to assure equality for girls’ and women’s sports. Hyman died of Marfan’s Syndrome in 1986 while competing in a volleyball tournament in Japan.

Since that time, the annual event has evolved into a day to acknowledge the past and current sports achievements of girls and women and the positive influence that sports participation can have. Additionally, the day recognizes the continued struggle that girls and women have for equitable access to sports.
