Genseo women's basketball set to host Castleton in first round of NCAA tournament

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's basketball team will play Castleton (Vt.) in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament this Friday (March 6) at 7:30 p.m. and serve as hosts for the first two rounds. Cabrini (Pa.) and Muhlenberg (Pa.) will face-off in the first game at 5:30 p.m. The winners will advance to the Round of 32 and a match-up on Saturday at 7 p.m. 

The Knights are making its seventh appearance in the NCAA Tournament and its first since 2011. The 2010-11 squad, which also hosted the first two rounds, defeated DeSales in the first round, 62-51, before falling to Babson in the Round of 32, 65-53. Geneseo's record of 23-4 is its best mark since the team finished 26-4 in 2010-11.

Head coach Scott Hemer owns a 1-1 record in the tournament while the program is 8-6 all-time, its best run coming in 1992-93, which saw the Knights falling to Salem State, 76-65, in the Elite Eight.

Castleton carries a 23-4 overall record and has made the tournament for the second consecutive year and third time in the last four seasons. The Spartans captured the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Title after defeating New England College, 45-40.

Geneseo defeated Cortland, 61-54, to win its fifth State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship in program history this past Saturday. Senior forward Shannon McGinnis scored 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for her 17th double-double of the season while junior forward Allison McKenna added nine points and five rebounds en route to Tournament MVP and the all-tournament team, respectively. The victory was the team's 17th-straight, the second longest winning streak in school history (27 - 1992-93).
