CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) proudly announces the 2016-17 SUNYAC Women's Basketball All-Conference Teams, including its individual Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Coach of the Year accolades. All awards were voted on by the SUNYAC men's basketball conference coaches.
Cortland's Cassidy Chapko is awarded this year's SUNYAC Player of the Year. The senior Guard from Valley Falls, N.Y. led the Cortland Red Dragons in average points (16.4 pts.), assists (69), and 3-point percentage (.378). Overall, Chapko ranked atop the conference with a combined 444 points recorded and second in the conference in points per game with 16.4. During the Red Dragons post-season play, Chapko averaged 10.5 points and helped lead the team to the conference semifinals. Chapko was also selected First Team All-Conference for her outstanding senior campaign.
Leanne Corso from Oneonta earned this year's SUNYAC Rookie of the Year honors. The freshmen forward/guard had an outstanding first year campaign, averaging 7.7 points and .317 3-point percentage, which ranked her second and fourth respectively for the Red Dragons of Oneonta. The Commack, N.Y. native also brought down a combined 158 rebounds (avg. 6.3), placing her in the top 15 in the conference.
Geneseo's Scott Hemer has been honored with the SUNYAC Coach of the Year award. Under Hemer, the 2016-17 Geneseo Knights completed the regular season in dominant fashion, going a perfect 26-0 overall and 18-0 in conference. This is Hemer's third consecutive Coach of the Year award and fourth overall. Although the Knights suffered their first loss of the season in the conference final, the team looks poised and focused on competing for a national title.
Geneseo will host Muhlenberg Friday in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament, as the 64-team field was announced Monday. New Paltz will travel to Ithaca to play Bowdoin.
