SUNYAC women's lacrosse semifinal matchups set for Friday

CORTLAND, N.Y. - After a pair of quarterfinals were played Tuesday, the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) 2017 Women's Lacrosse Championship field was narrowed down to four teams. On Friday, host of this year's championship top-seeded Brockport will face fifth-seeded Oneonta at 12:30 p.m. Later that day, third-seeded Geneseo will face second-seeded Cortland at 4 p.m.

On Tuesday, the Geneseo Knights were able to dominate Buffalo State (#6) in a decisive 20-6 contest, as sophomore Maddie Lee led the way with four goals.  Junior attackers Erin Cregan and Hannah Millich, along with first-year attacker Tessa Doody, each scored three goals as the Knights compiled their highest scoring output of the season. The Knights edged the Bengals in Shots (35-12), Ground Balls (13-8), and Draw Controls (16-12). The Bengals end their season 6-11, while the Knights improve to 9-8 and head to Brockport, N.Y. to face Cortland in the semifinals.

Tuesday also saw fourth-seeded Oswego upset by fifth-seeded Oneonta by a score of 8-7. The Red Dragons of Oneonta were led by the efforts of Jaime Morris (2g, 1a), Katie Flannery (1g, 2a), and Kelsey Cohen (2gs, 0a). Oswego's sophomore Teresa Shattuck (1g, 3a) and junior Toni Laneve (3g, 0a) led the charge at the end of the game with 3:08 remaining, ultimately falling short. The Lakers finished their season 7-8, while the Red Dragons move to 9-6 and will matchup against nationally ranked Brockport in the semifinals.

Heading into Friday, this will be Geneseo's third straight appearance in the semifinal and a chance to compete in the SUNYAC championship game since last appearing in 2014. In a tournament that has been largely dominated by Cortland, the Red Dragons of Oneonta look to claim their second SUNYAC Championship, earning their first since 1998.
