Cortland Tops Oneonta and Geneseo in Preseason Women's Soccer Poll

Three teams received multiple first place votes in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) 2010 women's soccer preseason coaches' poll but Cortland finished first, topping Oneonta and Geneseo. Coaches voted for every team in the conference and points were assigned for each vote (ten for first, nine for second, etc.). Teams are ranked in order of highest point total to lowest with first place votes shown in parentheses.

Cortland went 4-3-2 in SUNYAC play and, as the sixth seed, advanced to the SUNYAC championship game for the fourth time since 2004 and is hoping that in 2010 they can bring home their first SUNYAC title since 1991. First team All-Conference goalie selection Pam Monnier finished with a .073 goals against average and seven solo shutouts.

The Oneonta State women's soccer team has won nine of the last 11 SUNYAC titles and has made eleven straight trips to the NCAA tournament, including a national title in 2003. The team finished 12-6-3 and 7-2 in the SUNYAC last year with the help of the conference rookie of the year, Kayla Brantmeyer.

Reigning SUNYAC champion Geneseo made an appearance in the national tournament and finished the 2009 season with a 14-4-3 record. The Knights hope to build upon last year's success, despite losing five starters to graduation including the 2009 SUNYAC Player of the Year. Geneseo returns a strong defensive unit that posted a SUNYAC-best 0.69 goals against average.

Plattsburgh was slotted fourth with 64 points after making its second national tournament appearance in program history. And rounding out the top five was a two-way tie between Brockport and Fredonia State.

Brockport, winner of the 2006 SUNYAC title, lost four of their top six scorers from a year ago and will look to the returning defenders for leadership. Fredonia State finished second in goals scored (40) and was to have returned Reilly Condidorio, 2008 SUNYAC rookie of the year, who netted 23 points for the Blue Devils. Instead, Condidorio will sit out the 2010 season due to an injury. Completing the poll was Buffalo State, Oswego, New Paltz and Potsdam.

SUNYAC conference soccer games begin Saturday, September 18. The six-team SUNYAC tournament will be held on Oct. 30 and Nov. 5-6 on campuses. Two quarterfinal games will be at the higher-seeded teams and the semifinals/finals site will be at the No. 1 seed. The top-two squads will receive a first-round bye.
