Karly DeSimone's final season with the Red Dragons has proven to be her best. As co-captain, she led her team in almost every statistical category and leads the conference in points (29), goals (11) and assists (7).
DeSimone was named the SUNYAC Most Valuable player of the tournament after leading Oneonta to their 12th overall SUNYAC Title and first since 2010. She scored both goals against Brockport, 2-1, in the semifinals and scored the game's first goal against Geneseo in the Championship game, 4-1.
Oneonta will continue on to the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament for the first time since 2010 and 14th time overall.
Not only is Karly a leader on the field, but in the classroom as well. The Mass Communication major earned a spot on the SUNYAC All-Academic Team twice. This honor is given to a varsity athlete who maintains a 3.3 Grade Point Average (GPA) or above for the entire season. She was also named SUNYAC Women's Soccer Rookie of the Year in 2010.
The Freshman starter, Chelsea Stahl, is a team leader in four out of six significant statistical categories including points (21), goals (10), shots on goal (32) and game winning goals (5). In the season opener against Mulhenberg College she scored her first collegiate goal.
Stahl continued her successful season by helping the Golden Eagles clinch a playoff position after scoring the only goal in a victory over SUNY Plattsburgh. Brockport's road to the crown came to a dead end when they were defeated by Oneonta 1-2 in the semifinal round.
The power forward is in the top five in the conference in several statistical category and leads the league with five game-winning goals in 18 games. Stahl has also been selected to the 2013 SUNYAC All-Conference Third Team.
A native of Brockport, N.Y., Stahl is the second athlete in the women's soccer program to win Rookie of the Year since Nicole Gibaud in 2006.
Prior to making the switch over to collegiate athletics, Stahl attended Brockport High School in Brockport, N.Y. where she played soccer.
Brian McGrane, in his seventh season as the Oswego State Women's Soccer Head Coach, earns his first SUNYAC Women's Soccer Coach of the Year honor.
“It takes a lot of discipline and focus to develop into a fierce competitor in this conference, but it is also important to enjoy what you are doing,” McGrane said. “My intent is that we can have fun without compromising our ability to work hard every day.”
McGrane's Lakers finished regular season conference play with a 5-4 record improving on last year's 3-6 record. They earned a bid to the SUNYAC Championship, an accomplishment last achieved in 2002. Unfortunately, No. 5 Oswego State fell to the College at Brockport in the 86th minute of a 1-1 game.
Coach McGrane is the second women's soccer coach at Oswego to receive this award since Sue Viscomi (1991 and 1996) in 1996 who is currently the Lakers Athletic Director.
