Bonnell, Cotey and Schafer Named to Academic All-District Squad

SUNY Cortland juniors Sarah Bonnell (Norwich) and Emily Cotey (Norwood/Norwood-Norfolk) and senior Nikki Schafer (Troy/Columbia) have been chosen to the 2013 Capital One Division III Women's Track and Field/Cross Country Academic All-District first team for District 3. The team was selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The three Red Dragons were eligible for Academic All-America consideration, but were not chosen for national honors. In Division III, District 3 encompasses all schools in New York State.

Bonnell is a childhood education major who entered the spring semester with a 3.45 overall grade point average. She earned All-America honors this past May with a fifth-place finish in the long jump at the NCAA Div. III Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She also won the long jump title at the ECAC Div. III Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, as well as both the indoor and outdoor SUNYAC Championships. In addition, Bonnell qualified for outdoor nationals in the 100-meter dash and for indoor nationals in the 60-meter dash as she tied her own school record in the event (7.78 seconds).

Cotey, an exercise science major, began the spring semester with a 4.18 overall grade point average. She won the individual title at last fall's SUNYAC Women's Cross Country Championships. Cotey also earned All-Atlantic Region honors with an eighth-place finish that earned her an individual berth into the NCAA Div. III Championships. In addition, Cotey finished 13th at the 2011 SUNYAC Cross Country Championships and earned All-ECAC honors in the spring of 2011 with an eighth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Schafer, a childhood education major, brought a 3.44 grade point average into the spring semester. During her senior season, she qualified for the NCAA Div. III Track and Field Championships in both the indoor pentathlon and outdoor heptathlon. She set a school record in the pentathlon, and she broke the SUNYAC meet record in the heptathlon while capturing her fourth straight league title.
