Annual SUNYAC SAAC Meeting Recap

The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) held its annual meeting recently at the Holiday Inn- Liverpool, NY with a focus on leadership and communication. Each of the SUNYAC's 10 member institutions were represented with student-athletes and advisors, the SUNYAC Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner as well as representatives from Special Olympics.

The group started with a team-building activity and then turned their attention to Special Olympic representative Cassandra Rucker and athlete Diane Budnar. Rucker addressed the group with an update since Division III athletics created a partnership with them in 2011. She talked about the importance of volunteers at their events as well as those who volunteer to fundraise and host clinics. Each school had the opportunity to give an update on how they have become involved with the national Division III Special Olympics partnership. A range of events included polar plunge, clinics, bowling nights, basketball games, serving as volunteers for the winter games and more.

SUNYAC SAAC Committee member and Buffalo State SAAC Advisor Meg Stevens spoke to the student-athletes about the importance of playing a leadership role at their institutions. Stevens stated that leadership is action, not position. The student-athletes made a list of leaders in their lives and the characteristics of a leader. Stevens challenged them to strive to one day be a name on someone else's list of leaders.

The next meeting will be Nov. 13, 2013.
