SUNYAC honors top athletes in week two of the fall season

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) selects 11 athletes of the week from five different institutions for their performances during the week of September 7-13. 

MALE RUNNER OF THE WEEK - Isaac Garcia-Cassani (SO)
Geneseo (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North)

Garcia-Cassani captured the top spot out of 114 runners as the Knights had 14 of the top 15 finishers to take first place out of nine teams at the Oswego Invitational, Saturday, at Glimmer Glass Field. Geneseo scored 17 points to take the crown as Garcia-Cassani crossed the eight-kilometer finish line with a winning time of 26.23.0.

FEMALE RUNNER OF THE WEEK – Emma Deshaies (SR)  
Plattsburgh (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh HS)

Emma Deshaies ran 18:55.6 in the five-kilometer race at the Saratoga Cross Country Invitational hosted by RPI. Deshaies finished 29th out of 277 runners and helped Plattsburgh State finish eighth out of 21 teams.

FIELD HOCKEY OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Alexa Sanzone (JR)  
Cortland, Back (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy)

Alexa Sanzone scored the game-winning goal 9:21 into overtime to lift the 19th-ranked Red Dragons to a 1-0 victory at Ithaca on Wednesday in their lone game of the week. Sanzone tallied the game-winner on a rebound after a Cortland penalty corner as Cortland improved to 2-1 on the season.

FIELD HOCKEY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Kailynne Reinoehl (FR)  
Cortland, Goalkeeper (Lititz, PA/Warwick)

Kailynne Reinoehl turned aside eight shots, including three in the final seven minutes of regulation and one early in overtime, to help lead the nationally 19th-ranked Cortland field hockey team (2-1) to a 1-0 OT win at Ithaca on Wednesday in the Red Dragons' lone game last week. The shutout was Reinoehl's second of the season and lowered her GAA to 0.64 while she raised her save percentage to .913 in three games.
 
MEN'S SOCCER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Nicholas Laurent (SO)
Plattsburgh, Forward (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South HS)

Nicholas Laurent tallied three goals and an assist in the Cardinal Classic Tournament on his way to being named offensive MVP. One of his three goals was the game winning goal in the championship game of the Tournament.

MEN'S SOCCER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Jesse Kohler (SR)  
Potsdam, Goalkeeper (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley)

Jesse Kohler posted a 3-0 record in as many starts in goal for the Bears last week. He didn't allow a goal in 230:10 between the pipes and stopped five shots in a 2-0 shutout at Skidmore on Friday.

WOMEN'S SOCCER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Olivia Seamans (FR)  
Potsdam, Forward (Bolton Landing, N.Y./Bolton)

Olivia Seamans recorded a hat trick in Potsdam's double overtime 4-3 come from behind victory at Bard on Saturday. The freshman scored twice in regulation to help erase a 2-0 deficit. Seamans then ended the contest with her third in the 106th minute. 

WOMEN'S SOCCER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Nichole Gibson (FR)
Plattsburgh, Goalkeeper (Arkport, N.Y./Arkport Central Schools)

Nichole Gibson had a flawless week with two shutout performances to help the Cardinals go 1-0-1. On Wednesday the freshman made a career-high 11 saves in a double overtime scoreless tie against Union. Then on Saturday, Gibson collected another eight saves in a 4-0 win over Elmira. Overall Gibson finished with 200 minutes played, 19 saves and 0 goals allowed. 

TENNIS SINGLES PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Mako Tanaka (FR)
Geneseo – (Tokyo, Japan/Keio Academy (N.Y.))
Freshman Mako Tanaka won each of her matches 8-4, 8-1, 8-5, and 8-5, respectively, to capture the A flight singles title at the Mary Hosking Invitational, hosted by William Smith.

TENNIS DOUBLES TEAM OF THE WEEK – Geneseo - Cat Crummey, SR (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) and Marylen Santos, SR (Jamaica, N.Y./St. Francis Prep)
The senior duo of Cat Crummey and Marylen Santos took home the A flight doubles title at the Mary Hosking Invitational by taking each of their matches 8-4, 8-6, 8-4, and 8-6, respectively. With the four wins, Santos is now Geneseo's all-time career leader in doubles victories with 56, breaking the previous mark of 52. She also currently sits in third place all-time for total career victories with 105. Only five players in Geneseo history have won over 100 career matches.

VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK Noelle Poloncarz (SO)  
Brockport, Setter (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park)

Noelle Poloncarz has been a tremendous asset in the early season run for the Brockport Golden Eagles volleyball team. The team improved to 10-0 this season after going undefeated in Nazareth's tournament in which Poloncarz was named MVP. Overall in the tournament, Poloncarz played three matches totaling 103 assists and 11 kills in 20 attempts compared to only two errors for a hitting percentage of .450. She also tallied three aces, proving to be a threat from the line as well.
