INDIANAPOLIS – The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team will face No. 9 William Smith College in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship Tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 4 p.m., as announced Monday by the NCAA.

William Smith will serve as host for the contest in Geneva, N.Y., and the winner will take on No. 4 Bowdoin College in the second round at a second and third round four-team pod hosted by top-ranked Montclair State University from Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 16-17.

The Hawks (13-8) qualified for the tournament by means of the State University of New York Athletic Conference's (SUNYAC) automatic bid. They topped SUNY Cortland, 5-4, following two overtimes and a shootout on Saturday to gain the SUNYAC title, their second in as many years. William Smith (15-4) earned one of five Pool "C" bids into the tournament, as it fell, 4-3, to No. 12 Skidmore College in the championship game of the Liberty League Tournament.

Notably, Cortland was omitted from the field despite holding a 14-3 overall record. Bowdoin, No. 3 Christopher Newport University, No. 16 Mount Holyoke College and No. 2 Tufts University joined William Smith as the other Pool "C" qualifiers. Pool "C" consists of institutions from automatic-qualifying conferences that are not the conference champions and the remaining teams from Pool "B." Pool "B" consists of independent institutions and institutions that are members of conferences that do not meet the requirements for automatic qualification.

This marks New Paltz's second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance and its second in as many seasons. Last year, the Hawks fell, 6-1, in the first round to then-No. 6 Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.

William Smith will be providing live coverage of the first-round contest via live stats, live video and an audio stream courtesy of WHWS-FM (105.7 on your radio dial in the Geneva, N.Y., area), pending approval from the NCAA.
