New Paltz Field Hockey Falls to Bowdoin in NCAA Second Round

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team saw its 2013 season come to an end Saturday afternoon at Montclair State University's Sprague Field, as the Hawks bowed out of the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship Tournament with a 5-2 loss to No. 5 Bowdoin College in the Second Round.

Bowdoin (15-3), one of the tournament's five Pool "C" qualifiers, faces top-ranked Montclair State in the Third Round tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. New Paltz, the automatic qualifier out of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), finished the campaign at 14-9 overall.

The Polar Bears struck early, with junior forward Emily Simonton redirecting a pass from sophomore forward Rachel Kennedy into the back of the cage just 4:20 into the contest. Senior forward Katie Riley then made it a two-goal game in the 28th minute, scoring on a three-on-none breakaway. That score would hold until the halftime buzzer, as Bowdoin dominated shots, 12-3, in the first half.

Senior forward Alicia Aragosa (Schenectady, N.Y./Niskayuna) put the Hawks on the board at 46:23, using a pass from senior forward Lauren Link (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) to find the back of the goal. Just more than a minute later, though, Riley struck again, cashing in on a feed by junior midfielder Colleen Finnerty. Riley found Kennedy's stick at 51:28 to make it a 4-1 score, and Riley completed the hat trick by scoring unassisted in the 59th minute. In the final minute of play, senior forward Danielle Conklin (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) scored her 28th goal of the season off a pass from sophomore Dani Ackerman (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East), and the Polar Bears ended up claiming a 5-2 victory.

Senior goalkeeper Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) made six saves in the loss, while her counterpart, junior goalkeeper Hannah Gartner, came up with two stops.

Bowdoin held a 19-9 edge in shots, but New Paltz owned an 11-6 advantage in penalty corners.

Conklin finished her career as the program's all-time record holder in goals (35), assists (25) and points (95), while Pjetri wound up being the program's all-time leader in saves (443) and shutouts (14).
