Cardinals Defeat Fredonia, 4-1, to Claim 20th SUNYAC Championship

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.
– The Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team scored twice in the first and twice in the second en route to a 4-1 win over the Fredonia State Blue Devils to claim its 20th State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship and secure an automatic bid for the NCAA Tournament.

With play going back and forth for much of the first period, Eric Satim struck first with a power-play goal at the 15:15 mark from Ryan Craig and Mike Grace.  Cody Adams made it 2-0 with 19 seconds left in the period when he blasted a slapshot past Fredonia goaltender Mark Friesen.  Patrick Jobb and Jared Docking picked up assists on the goal.

The Cardinals grabbed a three-goal lead at 14:14 of the second period when Ryan Farnan knocked in a rebound off a shot from Kyle Taylor.  Barry Roytman took a shot from the point that was tipped in by Dylan Clarke for his 18th of the year, giving the Cardinals a 4-0 lead after two periods of play.

Fredonia’s Ben Waldman broke up the shutout late in the third period with his 12th of the year from Bryan Ross and Jordan Oye with 1:22 left to play.

Plattsburgh held a 35-21 edge in shots.  Josh Leis, who was named Tournament Most Valuable Player, improved to 17-4-1 and recorded 20 saves.  Friesen turned away 31 shots in the loss for the Blue Devils.

Ryan Craig, Eric Satim and Cody Adams joined Leis on the SUNYAC All-Tournament team.  Fredonia’s Steve Rizer and Ben Waldman were also named All-Tournament selections.

The Cardinals, who move to 20-7-1, now await the NCAA selections to determine their next opponent.  The selections and bracket announcement will be released on Monday morning.
