Cortland's Williams and Vargas honored as SUNYAC Men's Lacrosse Athletes of the Week

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected Cortland junior Brian Williams (Holtsville, N.Y.) as the Men's Lacrosse Athlete of the Week, while his teammate, junior Jon Vargas (West Islip, N.Y.) has been recognized as the Goalie of the Week.

Williams helped lead the Red Dragons (3-2) to a pair of road non-conference wins last week, winning 37-of-42 face-offs (88.1 percent), collecting 30 ground balls and adding two assists. In a 25-9 victory at Morrisville on Tuesday, Williams won 17-of-19 face-offs, scooped up 12 ground balls and tallied two assists. He followed up by winning a career-best 20-of-23 face-offs with a career-high 18 ground balls as Cortland defeated Farmingdale, 16-7, on Friday night. For the season, Williams has won 56-of-95 face-offs, leads the team with 45 ground balls and has recorded three assists.

Meanwhile, Vargas was a major factor in helping keep Cortland's opponents at bay this past week. In a win against Morrisville, Vargas allowed only 3 goals while compiling 9 saves, posting a .750 save percentage. during the Red Dragons' victory against Farmingdale, the junior allowed 6 goals, notching 6 saves and posting a .500 save percentage. This year, Vargas has made 42 saves and maintains a .618 save percentage overall.
