SUNYAC tennis championship tournament set for Oct. 10-12

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The 2014 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Tennis Championships will take place October 10-12, at the Binghamton Tennis Center. Geneseo has taken home the last three SUNYAC Championship Tournament titles (2011, 2012, 2013). The championship matches are set for Sunday, October 12 starting at 10 a.m. The championship team will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tennis Tournament in May, 2015.

To get ready for the tournament, here is a quick preview of the first-round matches on Friday, October 10.

#2 East Cortland vs. #3 West Oswego, 11:30AM
In the first match of the 2014 SUNYAC Women's Tennis Tournament, the east division's #2 seed, Cortland, will take on the west's #3 seed, Oswego. The two teams previously met earlier this season, on September 18, where Cortland won 7-2, while sweeping the three doubles matches. Cortland is 7-4 (2-1 East) on the season, while Oswego is 4-8 (1-2).

#1 West Geneseo vs. #4 East Plattsburgh, 2:00PM
The defending SUNYAC champions and #1 seed in the West, the Geneseo Knights, 7-0 (3-0 West) overall, kick off their SUNYAC tournament by facing Plattsburgh, the #4 seed out of the East division.  The schools last met in the 2013 SUNYAC Tournament, where Geneseo won convincingly 5-0. Plattsburgh is 3-4 (0-3 East) overall.

#1 East New Paltz vs. #4 West Fredonia, 4:30PM
The 2013 SUNYAC Championship runner-up and the East Division's #1 seed, New Paltz, takes a 7-2 (3-0 East) overall record into the tournament. They will be matched up in the first round against the #4 seed in the west division, Fredonia. The two teams haven't met since September 2009, where New Paltz won commandingly 9-0. Fredonia brings a 5-6 (0-3 West) overall record into the tournament.

#2 West Brockport vs. #3 East Oneonta. 7:00PM
The last matchup of the first round pits the west division's #2 seed, Brockport, against the east #3 seed, Oneonta. The two schools matched up previously this season, where Brockport beat Oneonta 6-3 on September 12, 2014. Brockport takes a 6-4 (2-1 West) overall record into the tournament, while Oneonta is 4-7 (1-2).
