Geneseo's head coach, Jim Chen has been selected as the 2014 SUNYAC Tennis Coach of the Year for the fourth consecutive year.
Chen led the Knights to a perfect 10-0 campaign. The program won the SUNYAC Tournament Championship for the fourth straight year, beating New Paltz in the final 5-0. It was Geneseo's eighth conference title and sixth under Chen.
Geneseo also took home more hardware, as junior Marylen Santos was honored with the Peter Cahill MVP award. She posted a 3-0 singles record in SUNYAC and was 13-3 overall at first singles. The Jamaica, NY native also went 3-0 in conference divisional play at first doubles and 15-3 overall. She was a key component for the Knights throughout the 2014 SUNYAC Tournament, posting a 3-0 first doubles record with partner Mai Hashimoto. Santos was also named to the 2014 All-Conference first team for first singles and first doubles for the second straight year.
Marylen is a pre-med major on the Dean's list and the captain of the Geneseo tennis team. Her teammates and coach characterize her as a "responsible, caring, friendly, intelligent, creative, and someone who knows how to get the team focused.” Coach Chen shared that she is the first to practice, the last to leave and off the court she motivates her teammates to participate in charitable events like volunteering at the Theresa House, the Geneseo hospice home, walks for cancer, and leaf raking for the elderly. Marylen also volunteers to help incoming freshmen and helps keep the connection between tennis alumnae and the current team.
“Marylen is a person of character and integrity, the face of an accomplished scholar-athlete, a dedicated Geneseo student, and an elite tennis player,” Coach Chen said. “She is one of, if not the best, player that I have coached in my 16 years as assistant and head coach.”
Cahill taught and coached at SUNY Cortland for 30 years. In 1998 he became the Women's Tennis Coach and won the next five of seven SUNYAC Championships. Peter was selected as SUNYAC Women's Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2005. He passed away on November 17, 2006.
