Cortland triumphs in rainy final day of SUNYAC softball championship

CORTLAND, N.Y.- The Cortland Red Dragons were able to capture their fifteenth SUNYAC title on Sunday with a 7-4 win over Oneonta at Dragon Field in Cortland, N.Y.

In Cortland's third game of the day, the #1 Red Dragons mustered all of their talent to overcome Oneonta's cinderella run as the #6 seed in the tournament.  Rosie Phillips had a monstrous game at the plate, going 3-4 with three RBI.  Andrea Schoonmaker added two hits while Kelly O'Gorman, Skyler Hoyt, and Hannah Thornhill tacked on one hit each.  Jamie Lachall pitched 6.1 innings for Cortland, striking out four while allowing three runs.  For Oneonta, Dana DelGenio provided three hits and two RBI and Sabrina DeAngelis gave up three earned runs over six innings in the circle. 

Cortland had to fight all of the way back on Sunday after losing to Buffalo State on Friday.  The last day of the tournament featured three games before the final.

In the first game of the day, Cortland and Oswego continued the rain-halted game that was started on Saturday afternoon.  The Red Dragons were able to overcome four errors to defeat the Lakers 8-7.  First baseman Mikayla Shade had three hits and four RBI and drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth. Kayleigh Churchill tacked on two hits and plated a run. Sam Van Dorn came in to close the door for the Red Dragons, tossing three scoreless innnings in relief to keep Oswego at bay.  Jessica Roe, Sarah McCullough, and Claire Hewitt had two hits each for the Lakers.  Rebecca Vilchez gave up eleven hits and eight earned runs in the losing effort.  

The second game saw Cortland match up with Plattsburgh.  Plattsburgh was 2-0 coming into the game and was poised to reach the championship game undefeated.  Both teams traded runs back-and-forth for the first four innings, and were tied in the fifth. In the top of the seventh inning, Mikayla Shade delivered the deciding blow with an opposite field homerun that put Cortland up 5-4. Sam Van Dorn once again came on in relief and surrendered two runs in seven innings pitched.  For the Cardinals, Haliegh Agans connected for four hits and accounted for all four of Plattsburgh's runs. Rhea Pitkin took the loss for the Cardinals, giving up seven hits and five earned runs.  

In the afternoon, the third game featured Plattsburgh matching up against Oneonta.  An elimination game for both sides, Oneonta was able to win a slugfest 12-7.  Selena Ruiz came up big for the Red Dragons, with four hits, while Lauren Sabatino added two hits and three RBI.  Sabrina DeAngelis threw five frames for Oneonta and struck out two, earning the win.  In a losing effort, Haleigh Agans went deep for the Cardinals while Dominique Zummo added two hits.  Rhea Pitkin gave up five over 2 2/3 innings pitched and earned the loss.
