Filancia and Waldon Earn SUNYAC Softball Weekly Awards

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – New Paltz teammates Jaycee Filancia and Sydney Waldon take this week's SUNYAC Softball Athlete of the Week and Pitcher of the Week honors respectively.

Filancia was the offensive catalyst for the Hawks in a 6-0 week, all against SUNYAC competition to stay undefeated in conference play. In 23 plate appearances, the sophomore led the team in hits (13), runs (8), doubles (5) and stolen bases (5),while hitting .565 in the stretch with an on-base-percentage of .583 and a slugging percentage of .783. In the series over Oneonta, Filancia went 3-for-7, managing one of three hits in a 2-1 game two win over the Red Dragons where she showed off her athleticism at third base with two catches on the hot corner, coming as lasers off the bat of Oneonta, the most impressive was a leaping snatch that earned the second out of the fifth, after making a reactionary catch and in the bottom of the first, then throwing out the runner at second for two quick outs after Oneonta opened up the inning with a leadoff double. Against Plattsburgh she was one of two runs scored in a 2-0 win in game one, finishing with a double and a run scored. She paced the offense in game two, going 3-for-4 with three runs and a double. Her hot bat continued against Potsdam, as she went 6-for-10 in the series with two doubles, combining for four runs scored, three RBI and a walk, while totaling four stolen bases in game one to tie a single-game program record. Filancia finished with a perfect fielding percentage on the week after totaling 14 catches, eight put outs and six assists.

Waldon appeared in three games on the week and earned a win in each as she improved her overall record to a career-best 12-1. She was two outs away from securing her first career no-hitter in a 5-1 win over Potsdam, but gave up two base hits in the bottom of the seventh. However, she still anchored down for the win, yielding just two hits, no earned runs and two walks with 10 strikeouts in a dominant complete game win. Earlier in the week, she helped the Hawks to a 2-1 win over Oneonta where she went to work for another complete game on seven innings pitched, giving up seven hits, one earned run and one walk with a strikeout. In a 7-2 victory over Plattsburgh Saturday, Waldon tossed five innings, gave up six hits, two earned runs, two walks with five strikeouts. Through the three game stretch, Waldon pitched a total of 19 innings, giving up just three earned runs and five walks with 16 strikeouts with a k/7 of 5.89, an ERA of 1.11 and a WHIP of 1.05.
