INDIANAPOLIS – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team will head south to Newport News, Va., for NCAA Tournament regional play as a part of the eight-team Christopher Newport Regional at Christopher Newport University's Freeman Center, as announced Monday by the NCAA. The Hawks will face Haverford College in the first round on Friday, Nov. 14.
The complete tournament field includes 64 teams from across the nation that will compete at eight regional sites.
New Paltz (31-5) qualified for the NCAA Tournament by virtue of the State University of New York Athletic Conference's (SUNYAC) automatic bid, which it earned over the weekend after capturing its second-ever SUNYAC title. Haverford (21-9) earned one of the field's 20 Pool "C" berths and is the lone at-large qualifier in the Christopher Newport Regional.
New Paltz is making its fifth NCAA Tournament appearance and its third straight. The Hawks are 8-4 all-time at the NCAA Tournament and reached the national quarterfinals in 2008. Haverford is also making its fifth NCAA Tournament appearance and its first since qualifying for the tournament four years in a row from 2006-09. The Fords are 4-4 all-time in NCAA Tournament play and made it to the regional final in 2007.
The winner of the New Paltz-Haverford match will play either No. 12 Eastern University (29-5) or Salem College (25-6) in the second round. On the top side of the regional bracket, host No. 9 Christopher Newport (31-3) faces Gallaudet University (22-13), while Stevenson University (29-5) takes on Richard Stockton College (28-6).
