
#18 Cortland Advances on Penalty Kicks Over Oneonta in SUNYAC Semifinals

ONEONTA, NY – The nationally-18th ranked Cortland men's soccer team advanced on penalty kicks, 5-3, after a 1-1 tie on the road at Oneonta in the SUNYAC Semifinals on Wednesday afternoon. Cortland is now 14-3-5 on the year, while Oneonta is 11-3-4. Cortland will head to top-seeded Buffalo State on Saturday to play for the conference championship.
Mateo Marra (Ossining) scored Cortland's goal in regulation on a penalty kick, his second straight game scoring from the penalty spot. Jordan Ott (Fort Worth, TX/Southwest Christian) made five saves in goal for Cortland.
Joe Holder was Oneonta's goal scorer, while Tommy Kliampas contributed an assist. A.J. Lucas stopped five shots in goal for Oneonta.
Cortland started off strong by firing the first two shots in the opening 10 minutes, but neither shot found the target to test Lucas. Oneonta picked up the first shot on target in the 22nd minute, while Ott making a save in the bottom right corner.
Cortland broke through in the 25th minute on Marra's spot kick, as the graduate student found the back of the net for his 12th goal of the year.
The penalty kick was the last shot for Cortland in the rest of the half, as Oneonta began to take control of play. Eventually, Oneonta tied the score at 1-1 in the 38th minute, with Kliampas providing the helper on Holder's goal.
Ott was tasked with making three saves in the half, as the teams entered halftime tied.
Cortland had five shots on target in the second half, with Lucas saving all five of the shots. Meanwhile, Oneonta forced Ott to make two more saves, including one with just over five minutes remaining in the second half.
The first overtime period was pretty calm, with each team managing just one shot attempt, with both of them going off target.
Oneonta had all three of the shot attempts in the second overtime, and had a chance to win in the final ninety seconds, but Sam Rogers' shot rolled just wide of the right post.
In the penalty kick shootout, Yasin Choukri (Wilton, CT) went first for Cortland, rolling his shot into the bottom right corner of the net. Ali Somow fired his shot off the crossbar and out for Oneonta, as the visitors held a 1-0 advantage after the first round.
Josh Carroll (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) and Matt Shultz (Oneonta) both scored for Cortland in rounds two and three, with Carroll blasting a left-footed shot into the right side of the net, and Shultz curling a shot into the bottom left corner. Oneonta matched Cortland with two well-taken goals to make it 3-2.
Marra stepped up for Cortland's fourth penalty kick, sending a shot into the left side of the net. With the game on the line for Oneonta, Nate Masucci blasted a shot into the center to keep the hosts' hopes alive.
Muiz Bayewu (Lagos, Nigeria/Albany, NY) then stepped up to take Cortland's fifth penalty kick, rolling a right-footed shot into the bottom right side of the net to send Cortland through to the finals.
