The SUNY Cortland women’s volleyball team will be making its 23rd NCAA Division III tournament appearance and second in a row as part of an eight-team regional hosted by Clarkson University. The Red Dragons (39-1) will open against Southern Vermont College (30-2) in the first round on Friday, Nov. 11. Match time is to be announced.
The opening day of the regional will also feature Clarkson (28-8) versus Nazareth College (26-12), Skidmore College (27-8) versus Rivier College (N.H.) (22-13), and Middlebury College (Vt.) (21-8) versus Colby-Sawyer College (N.H.) (20-14). The Cortland-Southern Vermont winner will face the Clarkson-Nazareth winner in the regional semifinals on Saturday, with the regional final set for Sunday. The regional champion advances to the "elite eight" at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 18-20.
Under seventh-year head coach Pam Hoerup, Cortland won its 18th State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title this past weekend to earn an automatic NCAA bid. The Red Dragons have advanced to the national quarterfinals eight times, most recently in 2000. Cortland opened the season with a 20-match win streak and has currently won 19 consecutive matches.
Senior outside hitter Ashley Coyle (Mt. Hope/Minisink Valley) leads Cortland with 449 kills (3.4 per set) and is third on the team with 422 digs.
