Geneseo Wins Men's Cross Country Championship

FREDONIA, N.Y. - Ten teams from across New York State met up at Battle Island State Park, outside Oswego, on Saturday for the 2010 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Cross Country Championships. The Geneseo men claimed their second straight and eighth of the past 11 SUNYAC team titles by scoring 24 points to second place Plattsburgh's 62 points.

Individually, Geneseo junior Lee Berube was the top finisher for the second year in a row with a winning time of 24:54 over the eight kilometer course. Teammates Ryan O'Conner and Eddie Novara finished third and fourth, respectively, both in 25:17.

The Cardinals were led by senior Mike Heymann, who posted his fourth straight top-15 finish at the conference meet. Heymann finished as the runner-up for the second consecutive year at the 24:59 mark. Ryan Millar was the next Cardinal to cross the finish line at 26:19 for 12th place.

Fredonia State finished third for the second straight year at the SUNYAC men's cross country championship meet. The Blue Devils totaled 84 points, an improvement from the 2009 race in which Fredonia finished 35 points behind second-place. Senior Nick Guarino led the team with an 8th place finish (25:58) followed by sophomore Jake Krautwarst in 13th.

Other top finishers at the conference meet included senior Matt Avery who was the top finisher for The College at Brockport with a fifth-place finish. His time of 25:50.27 was six seconds ahead of the next runner. New Paltz senior Joe Gentsch covered the course in 25:56, edging out Geneseo's Lee Gabler for sixth overall in 25:56.42. Gabler crossed in 25:56.52.

A string of Geneseo runners helped complete the top-15 finishers led by Patrick Wortner (9th), Bill Juda (10th) and Mark Streb (11th). Oneonta's Nick Madison placed 14th overall and Plattsburgh's Chris Martin took 15th. The top-15 finishers earn all-conference honors with the top-7 garnering first team and runners 8-15 are named to the second team.

O'Conner, Novara and Avery each entered the SUNYAC Cross Country Hall of Fame. To earn the honor a runner must finish in the top-five once, top-ten twice, or top-15 three times throughout their running career at the conference meet.

Geneseo head coach Mike Woods was named SUNYAC Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year for the eighth time.
