Cortland Wins Women's Cross Country Championship

 

FREDONIA, N.Y. - SUNY Cortland won the 2010 Women's Cross Country State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title with a narrow two-point victory over SUNY Geneseo at the league championship meet at the Battle Island State Park Golf Course on Saturday.
 
Cortland, ranked 23rd nationally, won its 16th SUNYAC title with a final score of 32 points. Geneseo, ranked sixth nationally, scored 34 points. Plattsburgh finished third in the 10-team field with 81 points. Cortland captured its first league crown since winning 15 consecutive titles from 1984-98 and snapped Geneseo's 10-year win streak.

Geneseo sophomore Marissa Liberati dominated the competition to win the individual title in a time of 22:18 over the six kilometers. Junior Alyssa Smith placed third for the Blue Knights in 22:55.

Cortland junior Alyson Dalton finished second out of 115 runners with a time of 22:34. In addition to Dalton, the Red Dragons had three other runners in the top-7 led by senior Erin Keaveney (4th) in 23:02, senior Kristin Vespa placed sixth (23:11.15) and sophomore Jordan Naylon finished seventh (23:11.31).

The Oneonta women placed 4th with 103 points on the day and junior Lauren took fifth place with a time of 23:09 for the 6k race. Brittany Trahan was the top Plattsburgh runner, finishing eighth overall in 23:12.

Geneseo claimed the 9th-12th places by Julie Dmochowski ran 23:13, Danae Polsin finished 23:24, Mary Aldridge paced 23:25 and junior Ashley Jones came in at 23:26. Following Jones was Cortland's Dayna Eikeseth in 13th (23:32) and completing the top-15 were Cardinal runners Colleen Cotey (23:35) and Kelley Driscoll (23:36). The top-15 finishers earn all-conference honors with the top-7 garnering first team and runners 8-15 are named to the second team.

Liberati, Keaveney and Brunetto each entered the SUNYAC Cross Country Hall of Fame. To earn the honor a runner must finish in the top-five once, top-ten twice, or top-15 three times throughout their running career at the conference meet.

Cortland head coach Steve Patrick was named SUNYAC Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year.
