SUNYAC Cross Country Runners Headed to NCAA Division III Championships

INDIANAPOLIS - The NCAA Division III Men's and women's Track and Field Committee announced the team and individual qualifiers for the 2010 Division III Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships Sunday, and the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) was well-represented with four teams and two individuals selected.

On both the men's side and the women's side, there were 16 automatic qualifiers - determined at Saturday's regional meets - and 16 at-large selections to make up the 32-team fields. There were 56 individual qualifiers added to each field.

The SUNYAC men's team champion, SUNY Geneseo earned an automatic qualifier when they won the Atlantic Regional, led by junior Lee Berube in a course-record time of 24:28. In addition to the Geneseo team, the SUNYAC will be represented by two individual qualifiers in the men's championship. Plattsburgh's Mike Heymann and Brockport's Matt Avery finished second and 13th, respectively in the field of 268 runners after earning first-team All-SUNYAC at last month's conference championship.

On the women's side, SUNY Geneseo earned an automatic bid to the Division III championship with a second place finish at the Atlantic Region Championship behind sophomore Marissa Liberati who crossed the line second in a time of 21:53. Geneseo will be joined by SUNY Cortland and Plattsburgh State who each received at-large bids. Cortland won the conference championship and finished fifth at the regional meet, while Plattsburgh took fourth in the region.

The 2010 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships will be hosted by Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, on Saturday, Nov. 20, at Max Championship Cross Country Course, which is also where the MIAC athletes competed Saturday at the Central Region meet. The men's race will begin at 10 a.m. with the women's race to follow at 11 a.m.
