CORTLAND, N.Y. - Cortland softball was voted No. 1 in the 2020 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) preseason coaches poll after winning its 16th overall conference title last season. Geneseo was ranked second while Oneonta was third.
The Cortland Red Dragons finished the 2019 regular season ranked No. 1 and went on to win the conference championship for the seventh time in the last 10 years. Cortland ended its season 31-16 overall in the NCAA New York Regional. Six athletes were named to the All-Conference team including Sam Van Dorn who was named the Pitcher of the Year. Head Coach Julie Lenhart retired at the end of the 2019 season and finished her 30-year coaching career as the SUNYAC Softball Coach of the Year. Molly O'Donnell will start her first season as the Red Dragons' head coach in 2020.
Geneseo took the second spot in the 2020 softball preseason poll after finishing the 2019 season 37-13 overall. The Knights will look to capture their third-ever conference title, winning last in 2018. Geneseo had four athletes on the All-Conference team including the Player of the Year Danni Napoli.
Oneonta was picked third in the softball preseason poll after a fourth place regular season finish in 2019. The Oneonta Red Dragons had four athletes named to the 2019 All-SUNYAC team. The team will look to win its fifth overall SUNYAC crown in the 2020 season.
