
New Paltz Sweeps Women's Lacrosse Athlete of the Week Honors
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - New Paltz has swept this week's SUNYAC Women's Lacrosse Athlete of the Week honors, with Lexi Atwater being named Offensive Athlete of the Week and Gabriella Tommaso being selected the Defensive Athlete of the Week.
Atwater had a career week, highlighted by the game-winning goal against No. 19 nationally ranked Colorado College to give the Hawks their first ever win over a nationally ranked program with SUNY New Paltz defeating the Tigers on their home field, 8-7. Atwater was the game's leading scoring totaling six of the Hawks' seven goals for a game-high six points, while grabbing three ground balls, two draw controls ? which came in crucial times in the last few possessions of the fourth and added two caused turnovers while shooting 60 percent in the win. She backed up that game with a goal and a team-leading four draws against No. 9 Pomona Pitzer Wednesday before finishing as the game's leading scorer Saturday in a 16-7 win over Canton. The Brighton, NY natvie finished with a game-high five goals and one assist for six points which clinching her career 100th goal in the performance while adding four ground balls, one draw and two caused turnovers.
Tommaso was huge in an historic week for the Hawks. She made five stops, including on a fast-break in the final seconds of the first half to help in an upset 8-7 win over No. 19 Colorado College Monday. She also led the team in ground balls (6) and caused turnovers (3) in the win. She added a season-high seven saves Wednesday against No. 9 Pomona Pitzer while totaling three ground balls and two caused turnovers and in a win over Canton Saturday, the junior recorded four saves in 30 minutes of work while helping her record to 6-2 overall.
