SUNYAC Volleyball Teams Open 2010 Season

Five women's volleyball teams opened the season on Wednesday with three squads playing home-openers.

Cortland opened the season with home victories over Kean University of New Jersey, 3-0, and St. John Fisher College, 3-0, in a tri-match at Corey Gymnasium. Geneseo defeated visiting Nazareth College in the Carl Schrader Gym by scores of 25-23, 25-21, 31-29, while the College at Brockport Volleyball team lost its first game under first year head coach Kelly Greapentrog by a score of 3-0 to Roberts Wesleyan College. The New Paltz Hawks debuted with a 3-0 road victory over Montclair State and the Bengals of Buffalo State came back after dropping the first set of the evening to D'Youville to win in four sets.

The remaining five SUNYAC squads are set to open the season over the weekend. The Fredonia Blue Devils and the Potsdam Bears will be at the Cortland Tournament along with the Red Dragons, New Paltz and Buffalo State. Fredonia, who returns all but one starter and has nine upperclassmen, will face Montclair State and St. Lawrence on Friday. The Bears, who enter the 2010 season with 12 of their 14 players at freshmen or sophomore eligibility, will face Vassar and Rochester on the first day of the tournament.

Oneonta will begin their season on the west coast in the Pacific University Tournament in Oregon. The Red Dragons have a young squad as well; only five upperclassman, and face off against the host school on Friday night. Oswego State and Plattsburgh will both begin action on Saturday September 4th. The Lakers don six upperclassmen and hope to improve on last year's overall record of 7-24 as they will participate in the two-day Hartwick Invitational. The Cardinals will face off against Plymouth State and Norwich in a tri-match and unlike the other SUNYAC schools, Plattsburgh does not have a freshman on the squad.
