Cortland's Kristen Guercio Earns Women's Volleyball Div. III National Player of the Week Honor

Kristen Guercio (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown East), a sophomore setter for SUNY Cortland, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week after leading the Red Dragons to a pair of wins last week.

Guercio was also selected as the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Volleyball Player of the Week after earning Most Valuable Player honors at last weekend's SUNYAC postseason tournament. She averaged 11.1 assists per set in two victories as the Red Dragons won their 17th league title and first since 2007.

Guercio started things off with 30 assists and nine digs in a sweep of Geneseo. In the win, Guercio helped lead her team to a .322 hitting percentage. She continued her run with 48 assists and nine more digs in a win over New Paltz in the second game.

The award marks just the third time an athlete from SUNY Cortland has earned Sports Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week accolades, the last being Megan Thurkins nearly a decade ago (Nov. 13, 2000).

The Red Dragons will be making their 22nd NCAA Division III tournament appearance as part of an eight-team regional hosted by Frostburg St. University of Maryland. Play opens for Cortland on Friday at 5:30 p.m. against Case Western Reserve University of Ohio.
